Four days ’til ACL: Ozomatli

The countdown has begun. The Austin City Limits Music Festival starts in just four days, and until then I’ll be giving you a daily rundown of the bands I’m looking forward to the most.

But, ya know, I almost feel bad about getting to go to ACL. I’ve lived in Austin my whole life, but this will be the first year to attend. It’s not like I couldn’t afford tickets before; it’s just that ACL really isn’t my scene. My kind of music really isn’t the kind of sound that ACL showcases. But this year, I got a 3-day press pass to the festival, and even though I may not know that many bands playing, I’m determined to enjoy the weekend!

But back to the music.

Ozomatli plays the Clear 4G stage from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The band is no stranger to Austin or its extravagant festivals. Earlier this year, the group planned an exhilarating set at Auditorium Shores during South By Southwest, and that’s where I first heard of and saw  Ozomatli.

Ozomatli combines flavors of classic Latin sounds with hip-hop, reggae, salsa, cumba, and samba. While it sounds like genre overload, the seven member band makes it work.

Ozomatli plays sets that hypnotize everyone in the audience. People start moving their feet, shaking their hips, and letting the music take control, and before you know it, a conga line is making its way through the crowd. I just hope their set at ACL is as awesome as it was at SXSW.
